The annual Fountain Hills Great Fair was held on February 25, 1996. Sunday morning dawned with blue skies and light winds. Fountain Hills, nestled at the base of the McDowell Mountains, is the home to the world’s tallest fountain (560 feet tall). The balloon race was held in conjunction with the Fountain Hills arts and craft show. The weekend activities included the arts and crafts booths, continuous entertainment, and even Maricopa County’s Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, was there signing the fluorescent pink boxer shorts sold as a fund raiser.
Balloonmeister Bill Heck called a Hare and Hound race as 40 balloons prepared to ascend over the world’s tallest fountain. The scenery was breath taking. To the west of Fountain Park lie the McDowell mountains and beyond the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Scottsdale. And to the east, the rugged Four Peaks wilderness, accented with it’s 7,000 foot peaks.
A majority of the balloons landed in a nearby residential area, where we were welcomed by residents. One pilot even gave tethered rides to the neighbors. It turned out to be a small block party. In return for the flight, neighbors were bringing out muffins and juice for everyone.
Four pilots were able to maneuver near the X, which was placed about one mile away from the launch site. However, only two pilots scored. First place was Kevin Flanagan, pilot of the new Wendy/KMLS Country balloon. Second place went to Scott Nicol, pilot of Roping the Wind.
After the award ceremony, pilots, crew and their families had a wonderful day picnicking in the Fountain Hills park. Although a little breezy, it was a gorgeous day. Next year is sure to be just as fulfilling.
