Every year the Balloon Society of Kentucky organizes their "Holiday Luminary" to benefit Kentucky Harvest, a local food bank for the needy. The 14th Annual event was the most successful in its history.
Thirty-four sport, commercial and Special Shape balloons gathered at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky to help collect canned food for the hungry persons of the community on December 14. Light winds allowed the balloons and approximately 21,000 spectators to enjoy the evening. The airport closes down for fixed wing operations which allows the spectators to walk among the balloons, and a separate area is set aside for persons driving through.
Special Shapes included Arky (Noah's Ark), the Kool Race Cars, the Early Times Bottle, and of course Frank Prell's Santa Clause. Several balloons gave tethered balloon rides, and the money collected from these rides was also donated to Kentucky Harvest. The event was free to the public and lasted over two hours. The 15th Annual event is scheduled for December 13, 1997.
