The Ohio Valley Great Hot Air Balloon Festival

Beautiful weather greeted the 80 pilots and crews August 1 & 2 in Louisville, Kentucky. Sponsored by The Louisville Defender Newspaper this event has grown from an evening race to a two day event with over $55,000 in prizes and cash.

Friday evening's flight found the pilots flying into a state park to two poles, one containing a new car and the other had $10,000. After many near misses John "Pole Boy" Hitron from Louisville, Kentucky took the keys to a 1997 Saturn. A picnic in the park followed the flight.

Saturday morning's sunrise shined bright on the field in a west Louisville park where the pilots found two more poles waiting for them, the $10,000 pole and a second pole for a 1997 pick-up truck. Launch fields were slim pickings across the river in Indiana, where pilots had to fly across the "knobs" (small mountains). The poles narrowly dodged many pilots until Johnny "Juan Petrano" Petrehn ran into $10,000 in the park.

Saturday evening came with a little brisker winds and less steering and no pilots scored in the Hare and Hound race. Each race was followed by a home cooked meal. Saturday evening's party featured a live band and dancing lessons. Next year's event is already being planned based on the success of this year's event.
