January 2000
years
we have spent our
Labo r
Day
attendi ng
the
Co lo-rad o
Springs Balloon Classic. This year would
be
a
little
different
since
we
would
be
doing
the
first
road
trip in our new chase vehicle, a
one ton
Super Duty
Ford
van.
We
finished
installing
the
lift
gate, put in a specially designed
floor,
loaded
the
balloon
and
equipment,
and
were
ready
to
drive the 350 miles to Colorado
Springs. We arrived
on Friday
September 3, checked
into
the
Antlers
Adam’s
Mark
Hotel
(our sponsor the
past 8
years),
went through pilot registration,
and the pilot briefing. After the
briefing
there
was
a
Get
Ac-
quainted Reception to
kick off
the
2 3rd
An nu al
Col orado
Springs
Balloon
Classic.
At the pilot briefing Satur-
day morning we were informed
that theweatherconditions were
almost
ideal.
We
all
headed
back
to our launch
spots
to
get
our aerostats
ready for flight. I
launched
early
in
the
second
wave, carrying our sponsors on
their
first
flight.
After
flying
down the lake that shares space
in
the
park,
I
found
a
narrow
layer of wind that took me back
to
the
launch
field.
The
wind
was very
slow so I was able to
boxed back to the field. We landed back
on the field after we received the OK from
Balloon Classic
Officials.
Over twenty
balloons
fol-
lowed
us
back
to
the
field,
much
to
the
delight of the spectators.
Later I was in-
formed
that
this
was
only
the
second time in
23 years of the
Classic.
Saturday
evening
we
all
attended
a
Mexican
buffet
held
in
a large
tent
next
to
the
launch
field.
After
the
buffet
some of
the balloons
put
on
a
Balloon Glo
for a huge crowd
that came for the Glo.
Sunday
morning’s
flight
was cancelled because of high
winds.
After
hearing
the
can-
cellation
we
headed
off
to
do
breakfast at a downtown eatery
with our local crew, then we all
headed
up
to Manitou
Springs
to
check
out
an
art
show that
has become a yearly excursion.
Monday morning the flying was
great, although the winds were
almost to light & variable. We
flew
several
miles
in
a
little
ov er
o ne
ho ur,
landed
an d
packed
up
the
balloon,
refu-
eled, then headed offto the Fare-
well
Awards
Brunch
back
at
the Antlers Hotel.
Most
of the
balloonist’s
attend
the
brunch
so
that
they
have
a
chance
to
win one of the many prizes that
areraffled offduring the brunch.
You have to
be there in
person
to win.
