January 2000
spent
several
days
touring
around
Utah, then
headed off to
Reno on
Thurs-
day. We had to leave Utah
very
early, so
that
we
could
make
the
600-
mile drive and arrive in Reno in
time for pilot registration. Reg-
istration
for
the
18th
Annual
Great
Reno Balloon
Race
was
held
at
a
new
venue,
the
Na-
tional Bowling Stadium. There
was
a
good
selection
of food,
drink,
and
some
fun
bowling
competition
between
the
bal-
loonists.
Friday
morning
I
was
as-
signed to fly acameraman from
one of the
sponsoring
TV sta-
tions. This year we were spon-
sored by the GRBR to fly press
&VIP’s, along with Koh Murai.
The
box
winds
were
working
well on Friday and Iwas able to
fly
sev eral
passes
o ver
th e
launch
field,
which
made
the
TVstation very happy. As soon
as
I
landed
the
balloon
in
a
residential
neighborhood,
the
cameraman was picked up by a
car
from
the
station
and
was
rushed back to thefield forpost-
production.
My
crew
showed
up and we deflated the balloon
in
the
street,
with
the
help
of
many
of
the
residents.
Friday
evening
the
balloonists
and
sponsors were treated to an ex-
cellent buffet and Motown Party
Saturday morning begins at 5:15 a.m.
with a unique event, the Glow Show. This
Balloon Race
morning
balloon
glow is
followed
by the Dawn Patrol at
5:30 a.m., and the
regular balloon launch starts at 6:45 a.m..
My
assignment
for
the
Satur-
day morning flight was the still
photographer forthe Reno Con-
vention Bureau. Since the load
was smaller
I was
also
able
to
fly oneof our crew members on
her
first
ballo on
flight.
Our
flight
was
similar
to
Fridays,
but I decided to make it easy on
the chase crewand landed back
at
the park. Sunday morning’s
schedule
and
flight
were
the
same
as
Saturdays.
After
we
wrapped
up
our flight, packed
up
our
equipment,
we
hit
the
road for another leg of our road
trip.
We left Reno around noon
on Sunday and drove550 miles
to St. George, Utah. Monday &
Tuesday
we
visited
numerous
scenic
areas in
southern
Utah.
Wednesday morning we drove
to
Lake Powell, Arizona to
do
breakfast
with
an
old
friend,
then
drove
down
to
the
Hopi
Reservation
to
visit
some
of
our
Hopi
friends,
and
a
few
galleries. We stopped fora early
dinner in Gallup, NewMexico,
then finished ourfinal600 miles
into Albuquerque.
