February 2000
Breckenridge
Continental
Divide
Hot Air Balloon Challenge, December 7-
12,
is
normally
the
final
event
on
our
balloon
schedule.
The
past
few
years
I
have been
in
Morocco
during December
helping PerLindstrand and Richard Bran-
son
with
their
around-the-world
balloon
attempts.
This
made for an unhappy bal-
loon partner, my wife Trish, since Breck-
enridge
is
one
of
her
favorite
balloon
events
during the year.
For this
event
we
pack
a
lot
of cold
weather
gear,
extra
fuel
tanks,
survival
gear,
oxygen
equipment
for
our
flights
that might take us to altitude from 15,000
feet to 18,000 feet and other items in case
we
might
have
problems
in
one
of
our
flights overthe mountains. Wealso tossed
in
skies and snowboards.
After
a
375-mile drive to
Colorado
we checked
into
our
condo
at
the
Hide-
away
Condominiums
(elevation
10,500
feet), and moved our gear into our accom-
modations for theweek. Tuesday evening
there
was
a
pilot
check-in,
party,
and
briefing
at
the
River
Mountain
Lodge.
The food was great and the pilot pack we
received
was the best of 1999.
The pack
included
a
Berber
fleece
embroidered
pullover, three embroidered
fleece
jack-
four
hand
painted
Chinese
balloon
ornaments, four ski passes, and more. At
the
end
of
the
reception
Ed
VandeHoef,
Balloonmeister, gave us our briefing. He
covered the expected weatherfortheweek,
flying at these altitudes, mountain flying,
and
what
was
expected
from
the
pilots
during the week. Topographic maps were
handed
out, and oxygen tanks and
masks
were distributed
to
the pilots
that
didn’t
have
their
own,
because
we
would
be
flying
at
altitudes
up
to
18,000
feet
to
clear the
mountains. Karin
Penegor who
is
the Director
of Special
Events
for the
Resort
Chamber gave
us information
on
various
parts
of the event,
and
informed
us
that
she had
been
in
contact
with
the
people
at
the
Guinness
World
Book
of
Records. They indicated that
if we could
get
14
or more
balloons
flying
over the
Continental Divide at the same time, that
they
would
include it
as
a
record
in
the
next
issue.
Ed’s
final
comment
at
the
briefing
was
for everyone
to
get
a
good
nights
rest
and
be
ready
to
ski
the
ex-
pected
6-8
inches of
new snow that
was
forecast
to
fall
over
night,
no
balloon
flight on Wednesday.
Thursday morning our 6:30 a.m.brief-
ing was at the River Mountain Lodge. Ed
a flight
over
the divide,
so
we
all
drove
down to the launch site to prepare. We put
in
an
extra
15-gallon
propane
tank
to
bring
our
total
up
to
60
gallons.
We
in-
stalled the oxygen, hooked on thesurvival
gear, and the started our inflation. During
our inflation
two of the 19
balloons took
off as early
pibals. Unfortunately
the Di-
vide flight was cancelled because the two
early balloons were not finding the winds
to
take us over. We took
out some of the
equipment and had a great flight down the
valley towards the town of Frisco. Iworked
my way into a large gravel pit and landed,
followed by ten otherballoons. After pack-
ing
up and refueling most of the balloon-
ists
headed
off for
lunch, shopping,
ski-
ing, or snowboarding.
Friday morning we all flew a similar
route to
Thursday’s
flight.
We
did
have
one X and a Hare balloon to add some fun
to
the morning’s
flight. I landed
the bal-
loon
across
the road from
the gravel
pit,
about a quarter mile from our landing the
prior day. After another day of skiing, etc,
we all headed back to the River Mountain
Lodge for aPilot Banquet Friday evening.
Saturday morning I got up and called
flight
service
to
check
conditions.
The
briefer
told
me
to
look
out
the
window
after he finished his forecast of snow and
low
ceilings.
When
I
looked
out
it
was
snowing
heavily and
the
cloud
base was
lower than the elevation at
our condo, so
we slept in.
Saturday
evening
most
of
the
bal-
loons participated in a Balloon Luminary
in
several locations around town, to help
celebrate the “Lighting of Breckenridge.”
Sunday
morning
was
an
optional
flight
day,
and
turned
out
to
be
another
non-flight day so we all packed up to head
home. This year the nineteen
balloon
pi-
lots
came from
seven
different
states.
It
was great to finish off our balloon season
at the Breckenridge event, and
Trish was
happy to attend the event and have me in
the USA for December.
