March 2000
this
a good
idea
or
what???!!
The
Southern California Balloon Associatio n
and the Las Vegas Ballo on Club recently
teamed up to present the first of what they
hop e
to
be
ann ual
cruis e
seminars.
Twenty-two balloonists and crewenjoyed
a three day cruise from San
Pedro, Cali-
fornia to Ensenada, Mexico while attend-
ing
a Balloon
Federation of America ap-
proved
safety
seminar.
Participants
set
sail
on
February
4
and
returned
reluc-
tantly to
shore
on Feb ruary
7. Dave and
Kim Lynch presented topics ranging from
FARs
to
balloon
maintenance
between
shuffle
board,
shows,
&
shore
excur-
sions.
Attendees
came
from
Southern
California, Las Vegas, and as far away as
Amarillo, Texas.
The
seminar
began
with
a
casual
welcome
get-together
on
Friday
night.
The group got down to business Saturday
morning, discussing weath er and groun d
crew
safety
prior
to
breaking
for
shore
excursions
and
exploring
in
Ensenad a.
Sunday was a full day of seminar presen-
tatio ns on
FARs, pilot decision
making,
and balloon accidents, while spouses an d
significant
others
bask ed
in
the
sun,
shopped, or took advantage ofship-board
activities for the day at sea. A compellin g
slide show and vid eo of balloon accidents
kept participants painfully aware of what
can
happen
when
safety
procedures
are
overlooked
or
igno red.
The
day
ended
with
a group
discussion
of
“Stupid
bal-
loon
tricks.”
After Dave
&
Kim
shared
some
of
their
own
mistakes
and
near
misses,
the
rest
of
the
group
chimed
in
with
th eir own mis-ad ventures an d close
calls. New safety
tips po pped upsponta-
neously
during
the “if only I had...” dis-
cussions.
Dave
&
Kim
Lyn ch
brought
their
vast
commercial
pilot experience (some
2,000
hours between
them) to
the semi-
nar.
Dave is
also
an
FAA examiner. As
n oted,
“It’s
better
to
learn
from
others’
experience
rather
than
have
to
make all the mistakes
yourself.” The ca-
sual atmosphere and leisure time between
classes encouraged the informal
sharin g
of information
before the
show or
after
dinner.
The
“hangar flying”
was
never-
ending.
Seminar
attendees
could
easily
identify fellowballoonists by theirobliga-
tory
festival
T-shirts,
pins,
and
Albu-
querq ue
jackets,
and
tales
sprang
forth
from
the
abandon
ship
drill
to
the
de-
embarkation
procedures.
Despite thedistractions ofexpansive
ocean views from every
window and the
temptations
of slot
machines
and
dance
lessons,Kim & Dave’s presentations held
the atten tion of novice and veteran pilots
alike.
The
smaller,
more
relaxed
grou p
setting
was
perfect
for
Kim’s
role-play-
ing
approach
to
seminar
topics.
Pilots
grouped
together
to
problem
solve
sce-
narios such as ‘Your red-line has become
fouled an d the surface winds have picked
up, ho w do youinstruct yo ur crew?’ an d
Cruise2000
and-d ash, your basket seems to be havin g
problems
clearin g the
water and y ou’ve
lost radio contact, what can your crew d o
to help?’ The role-plays were taken from
real-life experiences and generated
spir-
ited debates amon g the participan ts.
The
seminar
was
the
result
of
the
brilliant ideas and
efforts
of a number of
dedicated ballo onists, most notably Dou g
Campbell and Lewin Williams of the Las
Vegas Balloon Club. The only downside
was that the endless buffets may result in
weight
adjustments
on future flights!
