Balloon Life sponsored contest to
find the best balloon events three category winners were chosen,
best balloon rally in the east and west and the best safety seminar.
The winners of the Third Annual
Balloon Life Best Balloon Event
award are Oldsmobile Balloon Classic Illinois, Danville, Illinois,
Red Rock Balloon Rally, Gallup, New Mexico, and theCarolinas
Balloon
Association
Safety
Seminar
held
in
Charlotte,
North
Carolina
What made these events stand
above the rest? Here is what
the nominators
had
to
say.
Classic
“This 3-day event, held traditionally on the second weekend
of June
enjoys
incredible community
support.
The local
radio
station
WDAN/WDNL
broadcasts
live
throughout
the
event.
Pilots
receive
excellent
treatment—for
example
Danville
was
one of the first events to have a hospitality tent that feeds pilots
and crew three meals per day, every day of the event. Pilot gifts
have always been unique and useful—ranging from an attaché to
a blanket to a bathrobe, among others. Title sponsor Oldsmobile
once even provided every participating pilot a new car to drive for
the weekend.
“Event organizers
understood
early
on that balloons
alone
are not enough to support such an event. Promoted as a ‘Land and
Sky’
festival,
other
attractions
have
included
arts
&
crafts,
antiques, miniature golf, laser tag, and even a sand castle building
contest.
“Between
balloon
flights
the crowd
have been
entertained
by the annual Corporate Cup competition—a hometown Olym-
pics
type
event
where
teams
from
various
local
companies
compete in such
event as volleyball, bed
races and
more.
“But
balloons
are
the
stars
at
Danville
and
that
is
never
forgotten. Still the organizers understand that an annual festival
must continually
redefine itself if it is to remain attractive to its
audience and
compete successfully
for their entertainment
dol-
lar.
“This
is
where
Innovation
comes
in.
Each
year
Danville
seeks to bring a newelement to the ballooning aspect of the event.
For example, Danville was the first to successfully stage a night
time launch and competition
for pilots—the Nightriders. There
was
a less
successful
experiment
with a
Dawn
Patrol
competi-
tion. Danville was first to offer a ‘doubles’ competition wherein
(after the first task) the top scoring pilot is teamed with the lowest
scoring, second highest with second lowest, and so on. The event
requires no team coordination
among the pilots, but their scores
the highest scoring ‘team’ wins
the title and additional prize money.
“Danville
was
also
first
to
offer
a
separate
bracket
for
women’s competition. Another year featured the first US exhibit
of Charley Markert’s balloon art when more than
a dozen of his
hand-painted balloons were gathered together for a special public
showing with Markert as guest of honor. In 1999, with the theme
From the Earth to the Moon
the event celebrated aviation from
balloons to
the
Space
Shuttle with
local
Shuttle
Astronaut
Joe
Tanner serving as Honorary Balloonmeister.
“Other
unique
features
of
this
event
include
a
tradition
whereby one rookie pilot is selected by the organizers to receive
a traveling trophy—a wicker elephant coffee table—which they
must decorate and return the following year. Each year the effort
is
to
out shine the previous winner. A spirit award
is
also given
each year to the pilot who best exemplifies thespirit of ballooning
and
the Classic.
“While many
events, especially
those ten
years
and older,
often
rest
on
th eir
laurels
and
past
accomplishmen ts,
the
Oldsmobile
Balloon
Classic
Illinois
is
quite
possibly
the
best
conceived,
most
original,
forward-thinking
three-day
event
in
the world.”
Balloon Rally
“As
the song
goes,
Oh beautiful for spacious skies,
so
was
the Red
Rock Balloon
Rally
held in
Gallup, New Mexico.
“Red Rock
State Park is one of the most beautiful places in
the world to fly. The balloons glow in the sunlight, framed by the
majesty of the red rocks. Here, the balloons try
to
do something
I have never seen before. With great zeal they all try do bump the
rocks
with
their
baskets
and
envelopes.
Not
just
one
or
two
balloons,
but
everyone
that
could
went
for
the
rocks.
What
a
marvelous sight. Then Inoticed that people had climbed the rocks
so
they
could
be right in the middle of all the action.
“The
extremely
cold
conditions
in
Gallup
this
time
of the
year doesn’t stop almost 200 balloonists from coming to partici-
pate, making this one of the largest balloon events in the world.
Put on
with
a minimal budget, this turnout is a real testament to
beautiful flying. Karl Lohmann, PeterProcopio, and the commu-
nity
of Gallup have created
a unique balloon event.
“Even if this event didn’t have community balloon launches,
parades, balloon glow in town and in the red rocks, parities and
electrical plugs in the parking lot of the hotel, I’d still go just for
the fun
of flying. The main objective is to enjoy the scenery and
take up as many
crew people as
possible.”

“The 16th annual Carolinas Balloon Association Safety
Seminar, held inCharlotte, NorthCarolina, offereda unique look
at ballooning. The 200 attendees from six states and Canada had
the opportunity to actually build a balloon. Brian and Louise
Boland, Post Mills, Vermont, hosted a balloon building work-
shop.
“This workshop provided the participants with a different
look at the sport of ballooning. The workshop started on Friday
afternoon and concluding Sunday with tethering the completed
balloon, each participant received hands-on experience cutting,
sewing, varnishing, and assembling the 28,084 cu. ft. aerostat.
Brian Boland’s theme
for this session was
The Balloon: Its
nature, accessories, care and feeding
.
“The seminar also included the regular basics of weather,
decision making, review of flying skills and regulations. The
Saturday night dinner featured Tim Cole askeynote speaker. He
spoke and showed slides
from
various around-the-world at-

, to
Cable & Wireless.
“Kristie Darling and her committee used vision, courage,
and hard work to put together
an unusual seminar. One
that
