June 2000
were with the 5th An-
nual Hot Air Balloon Derby, held at “The
Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park,” Live
Oak, Florida. It was perfect for flying and
ju st
enjoying
natural
beauty
of
north
Florida. This
event
has
come a long
way
from
its
inception
in
1996.
It
now
has
plenty
to
keep
the large audience enter-
tained
throughout
the
day.
While
bal-
loons are the main
attraction, visitors en-
joy
the
Paul
Bunyan
Lumberjack
show,
Sky
Diving,
“The
Kiwanis
Rat
Race,”
lawnmower
races,
goat
show, Fine Arts
show, wood sculpting, car and truck show,
all day band showcase (14 bands), canoe-
ing, horse riding, mini-golf, horse drawn
wagon rides,balloon walks, balloon tether
rides,
balloon
trading
cards,
and
much
more.
This event now firmly established on
the first weekend ofMay. The18 balloons
that
participated
were
taken
care
of
the
entire
weekend
by
the
staff
at
the
park.
After
a
glow
Friday
evening,
the
first
competitive
flight
was
held
Satu rday
morning.
A
short
fog
delay
called
by
Balloonmeister Rob Schantz had the bal-
loons taking off at 7:30 a.m. Fred Dinkler
of
Marietta,
Georgia
held
a
slim
eight
point
lead
over
Doug
Gant
of
Deland,
Florida
after
a
double
hare
and
hound
race. Ben Burbridge of Jacksonville, win-
ner two years ago,
was
third.
A member party
for pilots and crew
was
held Saturday afternoon, after many
pilots
and
crews
went
on
canoe
trips
or
horseback riding in the 600 acre park. For
both
morning
flight briefings, the pilots,
crews and sponsors were treated to home-
made
pastries,
juice,
coffee,
ect.
“Defi-
nitely
the best food at any
event” was the
comment made by several pilots. A glow
Saturday night was announced as usual by
Tom Maynard. He knows
how to
get the
crowd
into
it.
There
was
no
disappoint-
the crowd
for either glow.
Sunday morning saw absolutely per-
fect weather and steering. Anotherdouble
hare and hound had the pilots going for it.
Fred actually got ahead of the Hare, flown
by
Chris
Sommers,
and
gambled
where
he would
place
the
target. The hare
did
land close enough to
allow him
to score,
and
Fred
ended
up
winning
the
event.
Second
place
went
to
Debbie
Hoescht
with her two close drops Sunday morning
and third
went to
David Cimini. Another
award fest was
held on site and everyone
headed
home around
noon
Sunday
with
great
memories,
new
friends,
and
over
half the pilots
had
more
money
than
showed up with on
Friday.

such a nice place to
Hot Air Balloon Derby
was incredible. The feeling of community
enhances the soundings of the parks un-
equaled Swiss Family, styled tree house.
In addition to the main celebration, the
park’s own bakery chef Lady Marcia
served incredible fresh cinnamon rolls
each morning. The park offers modern
cabins that some staff and pilots enjoyed.
There are also more than 1000 campsites
that pilots are welcome to use as well.
“Staying on site is the way to go, I highly
recommend to anyone that has an RV to
bring it along on this trip,” said Rob
Schantz.
