Pumpkin”Fun Flight
called
the
Great Pumpkin
,
the
Lone Star Balloon
Association held
fall
fun
flight
last
October.
October
23,
1999
saw
balloonists
gather
in
Alvin,
Texas. Entry fee was one unwrapped
toy
that the club planned to donate to Toys for
Tots.
The morning greeted everyone with
clear skies, temperatures cold (for South-
east
Texas,
anyway),
and
winds
strong
out of the northeast.
Fourteen
pilots
and
their
crews
met
at
the
standard
Alvin
meeting place, theKroger parking lot, and
stood
around
in
the
predawn
darkness,
drinking
coffee
to
try
to
stay
warm
and
hoping against hope that the winds would
drop.
No
luck,
either
staying
warm
or
getting
the winds to drop.
At sunrise, thirteen of fourteen pilots
decided
to
stand
down.
One
pilot,
Stan
Krovontka, chose to give it a go and make
ahigh wind flight.A couple of otherpilots
and crew went off to help while the rest of
begin setting
up for the picnic.
About forty-five minutes later, as we
were
unloading
chairs,
food,
and
a
gas
grill
a the
park,
we
looked
up
to
Stan’s
balloon,
Bullfrog
, moving quickly toward
us
from
the
northeast.
Had
he
gotten
a
little bit of right, he could have landedon
the vacant soccer field right
by our shel-
ter.
As
it
was,
he
passed
to
the
east
and
south
of
us,
landing
after
about
a
forty-
five minute flight. Thanks to Stan and his
flying skill, this
was truly
a flying
event!
As
for
the
picnic,
the
LSBA
had
provided the meat (burgers and hot dogs)
and
everyone
had
been
asked
to
bring
a
side dish ora dessert. All told, we estimate
about
seventy-five local
pilots
and
crew
came to the picnic but, in Texas tradition,
we
somehow
managed
to
end
up
with
enough food forabout 150! After a couple
of hours of socializing, photos,
and
han-
gar flying,
the
grill was fired
up
and
the
commenced.
Around
11:30,
as
people were finishing up their meals, not-
too-fabulous
prizes
were awarded
to
the
top
three of those who came in costume.
Finally, about
12:30, the vent
began
to
break
up.
While
only
one
flight
was
made,
it
was
a
good
and
safe
one.
In
addition, countless stories were swapped,
thousands ofcalories were consumed, and
as
we
all
enjoyed
a
crisp
fall
morning.
Most importantly, as many pilots brought
more than one toy and many crewbrought
toys
too,
32
toys
were
collected
which
went
to
needy
kids
at
Christmas
time
through the Toys
for Tots
program, pro-
viding warm smiles we can only imagine
on Christmas morning.
Many thanks to the pilots and crewof
the LSBA. This was a very informal and
loosely organized event. I think everyone
had
a
great
time
and
we’re
all
looking
forward to making the event happen again
this coming
October.
