The
US
National
Hot
Air
Balloon
Championship
scheduled
for
August
4-
11 in Rantoul, Illinois has been canceled.
The
Balloon
Federation
of America
an-
nounced that the Champaign County Bal-
loon
National
Championships
defaulted
on its contract
to
host the event.
BFACC Chairman Dan Sherrill says
the reason
given for the cancellation had
to
do with inability to secure the funding
necessary to meet contractual obligations.
Sherrill toldBalloon Life, “We regret
that this cancellation, especially at such a
late date, will cause inconvenienceto many
BFA
members
and
International
pilots,
officials
and
crew
who
had
planned
to
participate
in the
event.
CCBNC’s
deci-
sion, however, was out of the BFA’s hands,
despite repeated and concerted efforts by
the BFAto aid the organizers in obtaining
the necessary
financial support.”
Sherrill
said
the
BFACC
attempted
to locate anewhost city. Given the limited
amount of time to rearrange schedules for
all
personnel it
was not
possible to
con-
duct the event this year.
BFACC is
currently
in
negotiations
with
several
cities
to
host
the
event
in
2001.
The late cancellation affects not only
the U.S. Nationals, but the Women’s Na-
tional
Hot
Air
Balloon
Championships,
the
North
American
Hot
Air
Balloon
Championships, and
the World
Cup.

On
July
11,
1897
Salomon
Andrée,
Knut Fraenkel, and Nils Strindberg set off
from
Spitzbergen,
a
Norwegian
island.
Their
goal
was
to
fly
a
balloon
to
the
North Pole. Weather and equipment prob-
lems
would
eventually
doom
the
flight.
Until
1930, when the aeronauts
final
en-
campment and bodies were found, no one
knew what
had
happened.
In late May British adventurer David
Hempleman-Adams
floated into
the his-
“polar
plateau,” an
area within
60
miles
radius
of
the
North
Pole.
Hempleman-
Adams had hoped to fly over the pole, but
weather
conditions
prevented
the
polar
crossing.
Britannic Challenge
departed
from
the
same location
as
Andrée flight
in
an
attempt to accomplish what had been first
tried
more than a century
earlier.
Hempleman-Adams
reportedly
had
one close call with dead
during
his jour-
ney. Deprived
of sleep and
pushing
him-
self to
the limit in freezing
temperatures,
he
tri ed
to
sl eep
walk
fro m
th e
unpressurized
gondola.
The
safety
har-
ness
that
he was
wearing
prevented
him
from
exiting
the cabin
and
falling
to
his
death.
