September 2000
III
was
held
June
9-11
in
Roanoke, Virginia. It was the first year for
hot air balloons. Valleyfest III originally
started as kite flying competition and auto,
truck
show
with
major
music
entertain-
ment, and
an
end
of school outdoor con-
cert
for
teens.
Valleyfest
was
organized
by Roanoke County’s Special Events co-
ordinator, Eddy Ford. Balloonmeister this
year was Steve Woods of the
Virginia Is
For Lovers
hot air balloon.
On Friday morning, June 9, the 5 a.m.
pilots briefing was held at the hotel. Wind
was
light
at
5
mph.
The
balloons
con-
voyed to
the launch field, 10 miles away
at Greenfield Park in Botetourt County. A
mediaflight with five balloons took place.
The
Virginia Is For Lovers
balloon did a
splash and
dash
on the pond
in the park.
Friday
evening
a
picnic
for
pilots
and
crew was
held
in
the
park,
followed
by
tether rides
and
a balloon glow.
Saturday morning
the balloons were
back
at
Greenfield
Park
for
a
hare
and
hounds competition. Threeballoons made
it
to
the target. Drops were 17 inches, 18
inches,
and
22
feet
six
inches.
The
kite
competition, auto, truck showwas held all
day
Saturday
in
the park.
Saturday
evening
was too
windy for
a flight and the wind was blowing toward
the
mountains.
Two
balloons
ended
up
inflating and doing short flights across the
field.
Near
dusk
the
wind
calmed
and
tether
rides
were
followed
by
another
balloon glow for the spectators.
Sunday
morning
another
hare
and
hounds
competition
was
held.
No
bal-
loons, however, made it to the target. The
wind
changed
and
calmed
down. At
the
award ceremony, all pilots received money
by Bubba Winston of Mechanicsville,
Virginia flying the in You and Me Drug
Free balloon. Just like the first Albuquer-

loons participated in the first Valleyfest
balloon rally.
