September 2000
Quebec lies
in
a fertile plain
just
south
of Montreal and
only 25 km (17 miles) from the US border.
The 2000 event was held from August 12-
20
with
125
balloons participating
from
around
the world.
In
addition to
Canadian and
Ameri-
can balloons, there were others from Bra-
zil, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
Numerous special shapes continue to
attend this popularfestival. The ever popu-
lar
Sunny Boy
,
Mr. Winter
and
Miss Au-
tumn
were
joined
by
the
Space Shuttle,
Hagar The Horrible
and
many
others
from
the US.
Two
detailed
balloons
from
Brazil
were
also
in
attendance.
Amazon Birds
was designed to symbolize the fragility of
life in the Amazon rain forest as the huge
tree shelters birds on its’ trunk. The other
was the
Clown’s Head. This was the first
time either of these balloons
have flown
in
Canada.
The pair of
balloons called
Up Side
Down
(Festo) are a real eye opener as one
ofthem appears to be flying inverted! The
basket
is
virtually
inside
the
envelope.
These Dutch
twins create interest every-
where they fly.
In
addition
to the Festival’s
mascot,
the Canadian special shapes included the
Yellow Pages
Telephone Book
and
Papi-
The Pharmacist.
The
arrangement
for
the
festival
is
that
morning
launches
occur
at
various
parks
and
industrial areas throughout
St.
Jean
with
evening
flights
commencing
from
the
airport
location
that
also
con-
tains
a
complete
carnival
and
entertain-
ment stages.
After a terrific start to the event and
completing eight flights in arow,Wednes-
day
and
Thursday’s flights
were all can-
celed as a result of poor weather allowing
the
pilots
and
crews
to
catch
up on
their
sleep.
Friday
morning’s
flight allowed
for
some great opportunities
for steerage for
the pilots as they navigated over the nearby
Richelieu River at various altitudes. High
winds
eliminated
any
possibility
for
a
flight on Friday evening. Lingering winds
on
Saturday
morning
resulted
in
about
half
of
the
balloo ns
taking
flight.
Some
of
the
resulting
land ings
required
sufficien t
room for the baskets to drag as
much
as
25
meters
(75
feet)
before coming to
a halt.
Conditions
for
Saturday
evening’s flight from the Festi-
val site was windy once again.
And again this resulted in about
half of the pilots deciding to fly
with
others
remaining
on
the
ground
as
they
recalled
their
landings earlier in the day!
Unfortun ately
overnig ht
rains resulted in a cancellation
of the last flight of the festival
and
allowed
all participants
to
relax
prior
to
the
brunch
that
was held on behalf of the event
organizers
for
all
pilots
and
crew.
It
was
during
this
lun-
cheon
that
the
Canadian
Bal-
loon Association announced the
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
Balloon Festival
tition
was
held
in
conjunction
with
the
Festival.
The
Mr.
Christie
Balloon
Festival
continues to
attract great numbers of en-
tertainment including internationalrecord-
ing
artists
in
concert,
a
fantastic
play-
ground for children and a spectacularview
of 125 hot air balloons.
