Festival
in
Plainville, Connecticut, southwest of Hart-
ford,
saw
near
perfect
weather
for
the
August 25-27, 2000 event. Any balloonist
interested
in
attending
is
invited,
but
no
free rooms are provided
or sponsor rides
required, so
most of the balloonists who
participate areConnecticut Lighter-Than-
Air Society
members
who
drive in
from
home.
There was no Friday night flight, but
there
was
a
street
carnival
and
social
at
Norton Park.About a dozen balloons teth-
ered
before
sunset
and
participated
in
a
Night
Glow
afterward,
with
the
Glow
followed
by fireworks.
Saturday morning’s amazing weather
forecast was for clear skies with light and
variable
winds
at
the
3,
6,
9,
and
12
tho usand
foot
levels.
Local
low-level
winds still provided a good north to south
flow down
the valley to Southington and
other areas to the south for the 30 balloons
that took to
the skies.
Saturday
evening’s
flight
was
a
bit
more
challenging,
with
gentle
breezes
headed
west
to
east
taking
many
of
the
balloons toward
and
over
the
old
indus-
trial
city
of
New Britain.
Visibility
was
excellent,
and
the
Hartford
skyline
and
visible.
After
the
flight,
rally
organizer
Dale Martin and his fellow Plainvillefire-
men hosted
a dinner for pilots and crews
at the Plainville Fire Company building in
town.
Sunday
morning
provided
yet
an-
other
flight,
with
a
third
direction
on
a

flew at a leisurely pace south to north over
Plainville toward Robertson Airport, while
those that flew higher again
headed east.
Three
flights
out
of
three
in
three
different directions, with gentle winds for
landing.
Doesn’t
get
much
better
than
that!
