Annual
Waldbaum’s
Music
and
Balloon
Festival
located
in
the
town
of
Shirley, Long Island, New York got off to
a fabulous start three years ago. But, hold
on a minute, what do you mean a balloon
festival, on Long Island, two-thirds of the
way east, about 50 miles from New York
City.
Isn’t
that
where
about
8
million
people live within 50 miles? You bet, and
what
a
great
place
for
a
festival.
The
Brookhaven
Airport
provides
hundreds
of acres of parking, space for the balloons
and lots of room to roam for the hundreds
of thousands
of
spectators
who
come
to
hear
the
music
and
see
the
balloons
as
well
as
the hundreds of crafters and dis-
plays.

balloon
can
tether
and
tether
they
did.
With

corporates and special shapes tethered all
day with nearly no
wind. The shapes and
corporates
tethered
into
the
night
each
evening
for
a
spectacular
glow
and
the
sports sold tethered
rides for a seemingly
endless
line of willing
takers.
The musicstarted Friday evening with
Chubby Checker and Mary Wilson & the
Supremes. Saturday had
the Beach
Boys
as the main attraction and they drew more
than a hundred
thousand folks.
After the
concert,
the
Grucci
family,
long
known
for their
international fireworks
awards,
put on a splendid fireworks show that out
did
any
I’ve ever seen before.
Music Festival
Since
all
flights
out
of
the
airport
were not possible due to
wind
direction,
the
competition
money
was
split among
the
participating
pilots.
Several
of
the
seniorcompetitors (and brave hearts) flew
in to
th e
airp o rt
l aun chi ng
fro m
Brookhaven National Labs, several miles
north
of
the
field.
All
crossed
the
field
straight
down
the middle and
landed
on
the balloon launch
field. Congrats to Phil
Glebe,
Bruce
Bussey,
Steve
Davis
and
Gary
Cass
for
thrilling
the
crowd
(and
themselves) with the fly-ins.
The
festival
has
had
three
wonder-
fully
successful
years
with
creative
bal-
looning
taking
over where standard
free
flights have been impossible. Where nor-
mally a balloon pilot would want to fly his
passengers for an hourand land in a smooth
grassy
field,
this
site
offers
the opportu-
nity
to
earn more money than
is
possible
with
flying.
The
“walk
about”
balloons
were plentiful and the tethered rides went
on
forever.
Everyone
was
pleased,
the
crowd saw balloons and sponsor banners
all day, the pilots who tethered for endless
lines
and
most
of
all,
the
hundreds
of
thousands of spectators who had a perfect
weekend, great music and lots of balloons
on the field.
This
is
one
event
I’m
looking
for-
ward to returning too.
