15th Annual
Atlantic Balloon Fiesta
schedule
was
held
in
Sus-sex,
New
Brunswick on its traditional weekend af-
ter
Labor
Day-September
8,
9
and
10.
This
year there
were
28
balloons
regis-
tered for the event. The town of Sussex is
centrally located in
the province close to
the
major
cities
of Moncton,
Saint
John
and Fredericton, the provincial capital. It
is contained in a valley that is used prima-
rily for agriculture although some indus-
try has developed on the outskirts of Sus-
sex.
While Friday evening was the “offi-
cial” start to the event, the balloonists that
were
already
there
could
not
resist
the
combination
of
good
weather
and
great
scenery to do a flight on Friday morning.
This
time
of
the
year,
low
lying
fog
is
prevalent and that was the case for each of
the morning flights throughout the week-
end.
Unfortunately high winds prevented
both
the
flight
and
the
glow
on
Friday
evening. Saturday morning the conditions
were
ideal
to
fly
from
a
nearby
town,
Lower Millstream. The direction allowed
most of the balloonists to fly over Sussex
and
some
were
successful
in
flying
di-
rectly
over the Fiesta grounds
to
the de-
light ofthe many spectators that had gath-
ered. The
remainder of
the
day
the tem-
perature was warmer than usual and
this
attracted
even
more
spectators
as
they
could examine a huge craft sale, live mu-
sic on the stage and a sky-diving demon-
stration that included Mr. and Mrs. Santa
out treats to all of the children!
The winds were of concern in the late
afternoon,
but
dissipated
rapidly.
This
allowed
most
of the
balloonists
to
com-
plete
a
flight-although
it
was
short
for
some. Upon their return, conditions were
excellent for the glow as many spectators
waited
for the evening
event.
Sunday
morning
brought
about
an-
other beautiful morning as the low-lying
fog created a very scenic setting to fly in.
For this launch all oftheballoons launched
from
the Fiesta
grounds
and
there
was
a
surprising numberof people thereto watch.
Conditions were ideal and some steerage
was
prevalent
as
the
balloons
began
to
a short period of time.
The success
of the Atlantic Balloon
Fiesta was evident as numerous sites had
towels welcoming balloonists throughout
the
countryside.
Many
balloons
actually
landed on
sites that they been to in previ-
ous years. Such was the case for onegroup
of
balloonists;
they
were
not
only
wel-
comed
by
the
landowner and
his
family
but thetraditional champagne celebration
also
consisted
of an
impromptu
musical
interlude as the passengers were members
of a musical group that was touring in the
area. Such
is the hospitality
and
the fun-
loving
nature of the people from the Ca-
nadian
Maritime province!
