Day when the news broke in the Ter-
ritory newspaper,
Arizona Republic,
that
the
President
had
declared
Ari-
zona to
be the 48th
State. Governor
Hunt immediately announced that the
yearly County Fair held in late Octo-
ber
would
be renamed
The Arizona
State Fair
and
would
not
only
be a
show of cattle and animal husbandry,
but would nowinclude attractions for
children, horseshoe games for adults
and
Indian
Dancers.
Astar attraction would bea local
balloon pilot with his colorful airship
and
he
would
give
tethered
rides
to
the fairgoers who came from the four
corners of the State. And it was a Star
Attraction, for people waited in long
lines
to
climb
into
the
four-person
basket
and
rise high
enough
to view
the Capitol several blocks away. La-
dies
were
assisted
with
their
long
skirts
by
gentlemen
who
carefully
averted
their eyes
and
everyone had
their ascension
photographed.

husband
was
President
of
the
Horseless
Carriage
Club
of
America and
was
asked
to
head
the
50 th
An n iv ersary
parad e
on
Valentine’s Day in 1962 in our 1910
Chalmers Detroit. Dressed in authen-
tic
costumes
we accepted
a
copy
of
the original charter from
the Gover-
nor and that
afternoon
took
a ride in
a
local
balloon
to
re-enact
the
cer-
emony.
