for
your convenience. Because
the first few months of the year are usually
quiet he expects to put plenty of effort into
the project.
Britain
still lead the “World
balloon
race” both in what Mark has painted and
overall although
the US is staying close.
Belgium
has
joined
the
race.
Mark
told
Balloon Life,
“It’s
interesting
that I have
over 150 balloons from the USAand none
from Germany and only one from France
which just goes to prove that publicity
is
everything and I really need to get articles
in
the magazines
and
newsletters
of the
countries
and places where ballooning
is
strong. If you have aclub newsletterwhich
hasn’t
featured
a
2000
balloons
article,
it. I have about 500 balloons so far (and
plenty more promised) and although I’m
a long way from the 2000 I would like, if
I get1,000I feel itwould have beenworth
thetime and effort. Itjustmeansthat I can
choose 1,000 balloons myself to add on!
Soif you could help spread the word, I’d
be extremely grateful.”

More entrantshave tossed their para-

into
the
race
to
be
the
highest
jumper—from the edge of space. What
they all have in common is getting there
by balloons. Not since the early 1960’s
has anyone paid a successful high altitude
parachute
jump.
The
current
record
is
held byMalcolm RossandV ictor Prather
when they jumped from
Strato-Lab V
at
113,740
feet in 1961.
Joe
Kittinger
in
Excelsior III
falling from 102,800 feet is
considered have gone the fastest. Eugene
Andreev, USSR,holdsthe records for the
longestfreefallat80,360feet. The highest
jump attemp, Nicholas Piantanida, made
it to 123,500 feet in 1966 but a problem
prevented him from jumping and thegon-
dola had to be cut loose from the ground.
He gotneither an altitudeballoonor para-
chute record. Piantanida died in a subse-
quent attempt.
Rodd Millner,
of Australia, an ex-
commando is one of the latest entrants.
Millner plans toride a helium balloons to
130,000 and lettinggravity pull he back,
hoping to surpass Mach 1, the speed of
sound.
Michel Fournier, of France, is also
mounting an attempt along with Cheryl
Stearns, USA, reported in this space in
December.
Fournier
is trying
to break
three record, highest, longestfreefall,and
fastest
speed.
