Twenty-one pilots from California,
Idaho Nevada, Oregon and Washington participated in the Fourth Rogue Valley
Balloon Rally held August 14-16, 1998 in Medford, Oregon. Rally organizer
Tammy Brewer and her committee created a special atmosphere of helpfulness
and fun during this three-day event.
On Friday morning local media were given rides. One example of the helpfulness towards the participants occurred when pilot Bob Davis had a problem with a burner. Tammy quickly arranged to have Bob's burner flown to Portland, repaired, and returned in time for him to fly on Saturday!
After Friday morning's flight, pilots and their families were allowed a "free day" to enjoy the many recreational activities available in the area. They chose from swimming in the motel pool, sleeping, hiking, fishing, golfing, rafting, attending Shakespeare plays and musical events, or shopping in tax-free malls. Over 40 participants signed up for a 3-hour fun-filled raft trip on the Rogue River. They floated lazily down the river and kept cool by squirting one another with squirt guns. What fun!
On Saturday 21 balloons ascended in near perfect conditions. Local sponsors were given rides. With the Siskiyou Mountains encircling them, they floated peacefully over the beautiful Medford Valley where balloons are considered a welcome sight.
Later that morning, Mike Layman volunteered to give tethered rides to people at the US Navy Reserve Center. This was done to say thanks to Navy staff for helping to prepare the launch field for the rally.
That evening, some 60 people attended the pilot/sponsor dinner at JJ North's restaurant. Tammy introduced her organizing committee which included: Iris Antczak, Sandy Carnes, Rex and Diana Johnson, John Lucas, Shirlee Nash, Marilyn Roberts, and Teresa Sprague. Dennis Brewer, also a committee member, was back at the motel providing complimentary babysitting for pilots with small children.
Guest speaker George Hage, former Director of Apollo lunar space missions 8, 9, 10 and 11 was then introduced. Mr. Hage brought a model of the Apollo rocket with him. He proceeded to dismantle it before our eyes, and gave us staggering statistics and fascinating details about each lunar mission. I think all would agree that it was an honor to have heard such an interesting and distinguished speaker.
Sponsored by State Farm Insurance, a sunset night glow was scheduled after dinner. High winds almost cancelled this event, but amazingly the wind subsided and it proceeded as planned. I overheard Tammy express her delight as she watched car after car (an estimated 1,000 people) drive into the area for this event. Under a starry sky, 8 balloons glowed to the beat of music, dazzling all viewers.
On Sunday, overcast skies and strong winds unfortunately caused the rally to be terminated. Old and new friends alike lingered however to say goodbye, reminisce, and make plans to meet again soon.
Camaraderie, consideration and fun made this rally a tribute to the ballooning community. Visit Tammy's web site at: http://members.aol.com/tefiris/main.html.
