May 1999
Los
Lunas,
New
Mexico
is
one
of
our
warm up balloon rallies to help prepare us
for the spring and summer rush of events.
This year’s invitational event was held the
weekend
of
March
13
&
14.
Over
100
balloons
were
registered
to
fly
in
this
year’s
rally.
We
were
registered
for the
event and hopeful that the burners for our
balloon would be returned from repair in
time for us
to
fly in
the rally.
Friday night we traveled down to Los
Lunas forthe registration party.Wepicked
up
our pilot
pack
and
attended
the
pilot
briefin g.
During
the
briefing
we
were
told
that
the
weather
for
the
Saturday
mornings flight looked marginal, but con-
ditions
for
Sunday
looked
much
better.
We
were
still
ho ping
that
our
burners
would be delivered by UPS in time for us
to fly. When we returned to Albuquerque
we found
that
the
burners
had
not
b een
delivered, so there would be no flying for
us at this year’s
rally.
Kodak
recently
shipped
me
some
new ElOOVS slide film to test, as well as
a
n ew
Kodak
DC260
Pro
Mega
Pixel
Digital
camera.
I
decided
that
coverin g
the St. Patrick’s Balloon Rally strictly as
a photo grap her, rather than a pilot, would
give me a chan ce to test the new film an d
camera.
You
can
see
the
results
of
the
unexpected
quality of the digital revolu-
tion, in
the p hotog raphsthat
accompan y
this
article.
Saturday
mornin g’s
flight
was
can-
celled
because
of
one of
the
few
snow-
storms New Mexico received this winter.
Sunday morning
the weath er turned
out
to
be
perfect
for
a
balloon
flight,
although the winds were almost too light.
After
the
pilot
briefing,
which
included
the
excellent
weather,

truck, which was parked in our launch
site, to make our own preparations. We
loaded up the camera’s, rather than the
balloon, and got ready to photograph the
launch. Nick and I photo graph ed the two
launch waves, then chased the ballo ons
as they drifted slowly to the south. After
we got all o f the pho tography that we
needed to document the event, we headed
back into Los Lunas to get a warm break-
at
one
of
ou r
favorite
cafe’s.
Our
appetites filled, we returned to th e launch
field to
join
the balloonists for their tail-
gate party and awards
ceremony.
It
was
fun
b eing
only
a
ballo on
photo graph er’s, but we really missed fly-
ing
the
balloon.
Next
year
we
plan
on
flying the St. Patrick ’s Balloon Rally, as
well as providing our usual photographic
coverag e.
