Ever
need
to
ship
propane
tanks?
Before
the
shipper
will
except
them
you
are
required to
purge the gas vapor out. U.S. and
International rules require it. Neither the
Federal Aviation Administration northe International Air Transport Association defines
an acceptable purging process. They
don’t even define an acceptable result, other than
it
must
be
safe.
For
a
fee,
there
are
companies
who
will
do
the
job
and
provide
a
certificate, one they
made up, because
none exists from the agency
which require the
certificate.
John
Terry, Aerostatic Engineering, headquartered in San
Jose, California, inves-
tigated how the purging process works. His testing and results are detailed in our Special
Report beginning
on page 24.
The report not
only
examines what is necessary
to
make the tank
safe, Terry
also
tests
ways that you can purge the tank when miles from high pressure pumps and inert
gases. Using a simple compressor, a flame block, desiccator, proper hoses, fittings, and
valves
you can
purge propane tanks in the field to a safe level
for shipping.
If you
are
considering
traveling
overseas
to
a
balloon
event
or just
shipping
the
balloon across
the country, this article is
a must read.

Statesman
Award.

Sikorsky,
General
Curtis
LeMay,
Dick
Rutan/Jeanne Yeager, and
Colonel

After the award presentation Ed shared some stories with balloonists in a side room
from
his
early ballooning
days. See James
Ellis’ report beginning
on page 12.
