September 1999
National Balloon Classic put on an excel-
lent event. The weather & winds cooper-
ated
to
make this
a wonderful
week.
80
balloonists registered, some forthe whole
week, some here for the BFA North Cen-
tral Regional Championship & some leav-
ing
early to go
onto the Nationals. There
were
several
special
shapes
appearing
throughout the week—Shopping Around,
Oggy,
Flying Purple People Eater,
She’s
a Lady,
Burger King Whopper,
Matrioshka
&
Mrs. Butterworth.
This is
the 30th
Anniversary
of bal-
looning in Indianola. The Nationals were
held in Indianola from 1970-1988. When
the
Nationals
moved
on—the
National
Balloon
Classic
was
started.
The
whole
community gets involved —from the Clas-
sic
Board
to
the
many
businesses
that
sponsor the event. The event is affordable
family
fun.
Carloads
of
spectators
from
all over Iowa
and
surrounding
states
en-
joyed the show at the 155 acre launch site
with
a natural amphitheater.
The word on opening day was HOT.
The temperatures were in the upper 90’s
with
heat
indices
of
110-115º.
A
few
brave
balloonists
flew
Friday
night,
but
the scheduled night glow was canceled, as
lightning
could
be
seen
in
the
western
skies.
The
storms
continued
during
the
night,
causing
cancellation
of
Saturday
morning’s flight. But
the storms brought
in
cooler weather—what a relief!
Combined
with
Indianola’s
sesqui-
centennial
celebration
there
were
many
activities
around
town,
including
Pan-
cake
breakfast,
a parade,
a craft show &
bathtub
races.

At the first Judge Declared Goal

second JDG, the top five were within five
feet. Thursday night was a repeat of Mon-
day
evening.
Balloons
took
off from the
field & flew around, never more than one
mile
away.
Several
landed
back
at
the
field, ready
for another glow.
Friday morning—it was down to this
last
flight
for
the
overall
winner.
John
