The following remarks were made by Tom Hamilton, Editor, Balloon
Life, accepting the 1999 Shield-Trauger Memorial Award presented by
the Balloon Federation of America for his many years of serve to
ballooning at the organization’s annual general meeting held in Albu-
querque, New Mexico October 3.
I was walking down a path one day when I came to a fence post. Sitting
on top of
that fence post was a turtle.I thought, that turtle didn’t get there
by
itself—it had
to
have
some help.
The
last
nineteen
years
have
been
an
amazing
journey
for
me.
Anything that I have been able to accomplishin ballooning, whether as a
participant,
volunteer,
activist,
or
entrepreneur,
has been
because of
the
help
I have received from hundreds of people. People inthis room, many
who
can
not
be
with
us
today,
some
who
choose
not
to
be
with
us,
and
others
who
are no
longer
with
us.
Any incredible journey begins with a vision, is executed with passion,
but
is
not
possible
without
the
encouragement,
support,
and
the
gift
of
space to
go
out and
live the dream.
I want to share this award today with the one personwho
is primarily
responsible
for
allowing
me
to
make
a
contribution
to
the
sport
of
ballooning.
Because
it
is
the
unbelievable
enthusiasm
that
my
wife,
Wendy Ceccherelli, has for life itself and the impact it has on those around
her.
Thank
you.
